For 75 years, a solidly constructed knotty pine and hemp rope chair and companion rocker have provided comfortable seats for those who have spent time at a rustic log cabin along the scenic shores of historic Saratoga Lake in Upstate New York.

Lovingly crafted for family members during the Depression by Edward J. Broderick, the distinctively designed indoor-outdoor furniture garnered many a compliment over the decades from guests wondering how they might acquire similar furnishings for their own home or business. Until recently, the answer was that they could not.

Although Broderick had studied engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he got so busy helping wife Mim raise four children while simultaneously growing a business called Albany Spring Service that he lost track of the plans he had drawn up for his camp's unique furniture.

It wasn't until the upright rope chair and rocker as well as a matching recliner on wheels were handed down to the couple's youngest son and sole surviving offspring, Cole, that the idea of crafting authentic reproductions of the heirloom-quality furnishings was born. Best known as the award-winning composer of the four-part "Seasons of Saratoga" music collection (see www.colebroderick.com), Cole decided to conduct some research into what it would take to transform his father's original summer cottage furnishings into replicas that could be enjoyed by others who were smitten with their charm.

Thanks to the craftsmanship of master woodworker William Hauprich (who has succeeded in accurately duplicating details of the original furnishings) --The Saratoga Lake Rocker, Relaxing Rope Chair & Rolling Recliner are suitable not only for lake side cottages, but also for resorts, restaurants, B & Bs, and other establishments desiring indoor/outdoor furniture with a rustic heirloom look that is built to last for generations.

By special arrangement with the furniture designer’s talented granddaughter, Norine Broderick Molloy, replicas of a pine stand that has been a family favorite for generations can also be commissioned with a painting of your favorite scene of Saratoga Lake on the surface. Be sure to look for authentic reproductions of other tables, dressers, bookcases, hutches and assorted “whatnots” that were originally crafted by the family patriarch for use in his cottage to follow later this year.

In order to give customers the greatest possible range of finishing and decorating choices, we have enlisted the services of Sean M. Flynn Refinishing & Upholstery Co. of Saratoga Lake. In addition to offering vintage patterned seat cushions stitched of weather-resistant Sunbrella fabric and filled with heavy duty weatherproof foam or an innerspring cushion, Sean’s firm is equipped to handle all of your custom finishing needs from stain selection to polishing and waxing.
